Christmas Ideas – Turkeys aren’t just for Thanksgiving – Cook a Turkey for Christmas – Never Cooked One? Don’t Fear! I’ll tell you how
Every Christmas I would let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. Not this year! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new Christmas idea.
Thanksgiving is known for preparing turkey and Christmas is known for preparing ham. Our family is not fond of ham, so I cook a turkey at Christmas too.
Having cooked at least one to two turkeys each year for the last 30 years, if there was a black belt degree in turkey making, I would have it. To me, cooking a turkey is the easiest dish ever. I was shocked to find out that my best friend of 33 years confessed to me that she never cooked a turkey because it was too intimidating. She was afraid.
Fear keeps us from doing a lot of things, including cooking a turkey! But I’m here to tell you that there is nothing to fear. The biggest obstacle is getting the silly bird out of the packaging and prepping it.
Christmas Ideas – Watch a Christmas Movie
Every December I would let the hustle and bustle of the holiday season steal my joy. Not this year! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new idea. I hope you’ll join me in feeling the joy of the season.
This idea is to watch a Christmas movie. Unlike many others, I am not a person that enjoys watching the same movie over and over again. When it comes to Christmas movies, however, I do have a few favorites that I never get tired of.
You won’t find my two favorite movies on any top ten lists. They are both sweet and timeless films that I can watch every year.
This Christmas Reconnect With People through Facebook and Reach out to Someone who has Suffered a Loss or is Hurting
Every December I let the hustle and bustle of the holiday season steal my joy. Not this year! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new idea. This idea is to reconnect with someone.
I am amazed at how easy it is to find someone and reconnect with people through the Internet, especially through a social network like Facebook. I’ve connected with people from jobs twenty years ago and people I have liked and have met along life’s path but lost that connection through various moves and life changes. It’s been really fun.
The holiday season is a time for love and joy. This is the perfect time of year to reconnect because of this positive energy.
The holiday season is also a time for sorrow for many. Our losses tend to hit us the hardest at Christmas when friends and loved ones are missing from our lives due to a death, a shattered relationship or other circumstances.
Many times we may be thinking about someone, but we don’t know what to say. So we do the worst thing possible. We say nothing. Saying nothing makes that person feel alone and forgotten. We add to their grief. Continue reading
Christmas Ideas – Bring some sort of Christmas Decoration to your Office to Keep Work from Zapping your Joy – Create Peace on Earth and in the Workplace
Wow! I can’t believe it’s already the 14th of December. I always let the hustle and bustle of the season steal my joy. Not this year! I have been blogging every day to celebrate the season with a new idea. This idea is to bring some sort of Christmas decoration to your office to keep work from zapping your joy.
I have a little, artificial Christmas tree that stands about two feet tall that I have decorated with lights and ornaments in my office. It sits directly across from my desk on the credenza so that I can look at it while I’m working.
Bring some simple Christmas decoration to your office to remind you that this time of year isn’t business as usual. Use that object as a reference point to focus on the meaning of Christmas – love, joy, peace and goodwill towards others. Send co-workers a positive message and help create peace on earth. Who couldn’t use a little more peace and goodwill in the workplace!

Christmas Ideas Start a Christmas Ornament Collection by Purchasing one Every Year
Every December I let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. Not this year! I’m celebrating Christmas with a new idea every day. This idea Number 13 is to start an ornament collection.
Robert and I are celebrating our sixth Christmas together. Since we married five years ago, we combined our households and Christmas ornaments. Throughout the years I had theme-based Christmas trees, meaning coordinated ornaments with styles and colors. Robert, on the other hand, had a collection of ornaments that he had received from his family. Each ornament held a special meaning.
As a wedding present, we received a set of ornaments as a gift. At the time, Robert and I looked at each other after we opened the present and thought it was kind of weird. We had gone the wedding register route through our local department store asking for cutlery, wine glasses, china, and the like, but Christmas ornaments? Continue reading
Christmas Ideas – Idea Number 12 Make or Buy a Favorite Treat From Childhood
Every December I let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. Not this year! I’m celebrating Christmas every day with a new Christmas idea. This is the 12th day and I’m talking about making or buying a favorite treat from childhood.
My mom is a great cook and a great pastry maker. Every year at Christmas she would make lavish trays of exotic cookies and cakes. I used to love her pie crusts. The crust was solid like shortbread with a little hint of sweetness.
I asked her for the pie crust recipe to make a pumpkin pie. As a kid, I was always into eating the dough of everything, cookie dough, cake batter, and her pie crust dough.
I followed her recipe and decided to give the pie dough a taste. When I put that little marble size piece of dough into my mouth I was immediately transported back to my mom’s kitchen surrounded by tons of goodies. That little taste made me feel just like I was five years old again.
Think back to your childhood and make or buy a favorite treat that you used to love. Allow yourself to feel childlike again when life was simple and uncomplicated. What treats did you used to love as a child?

Christmas Ideas – Attend a Christmas Music or Holiday Music Concert
This is Christmas idea number 11 in my countdown to Christmas. At the beginning of the month I was determined not to let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. It’s working! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new idea.
Today we are driving to Kansas City to see Tom Jacob’s annual holiday concert this evening. Tom lost his voice last week and the concert was moved back a week. It’s really a lovely event. I wrote more about that on December 4th.
The rescheduling made for an interesting weekend. We will be getting up at 5:30 tomorrow morning to make it back in time for my choir’s dress rehearsal of Handel’s Messiah at 10:00am. Our concert is Sunday at 4:00pm. Like many other musicians, our choir has put in months of practice for this one event.
If you’ve never thought about it, musicians put their hearts, time and effort in creating music. It is their gift of expression to the world. Without an audience, they are just playing for themselves. Gifts are meant to be given away. So, let a musician give you their gift of music and support them by attending a Christmas music or holiday music concert.
You might not have thought of attending a concert as a gift. The bonus is that you will also receive big time because music can transport your soul to a beautiful place. There are a variety of Christmas and holiday concerts to choose from. Just get on your computer and do some searches in your area for concerts.
If you live in St. Louis, we have two great and different musical offerings: First Presbyterian Church Kirkwood performs Handel’s Messiah with Orchestra on Sunday, December 12 at 4:00PM. 100 East Adams Avenue in Kirkwood – 314-965-0326. And The Advent Coffeehouse – Sunday, December 20 at 4:00pm. Local artist, Dan Rubright will give a family concert blending jazz, folk, and pop music. They will perform songs from Dan’s latest CD, “Christmas Cafe.” Karen Blanchard will offer Christmas poetry, and Lynn Rubright will tell a favorite Christmas story.

Christmas Ideas – Bring in Nature as part of your Christmas Decor – And When You’re Putting Up your Christmas Decorations, Don’t Think Chore, Think that This is Meditation
This is Christmas idea number 10 in my countdown to Christmas. I’ll give you two Christmas decorating ideas that bring nature inside. At the beginning of the month I was determined not to let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. It’s working! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new idea.
While I do recycle, and am respectful of our planet, I am not a fanatic about going green. However, at Christmas time, it’s nice to bring nature inside. I blogged earlier about supporting a local church by purchasing a Christmas tree. There is nothing quite like the smell of pine to put you in the Christmas spirit.
We had to clip off some of the lower branches so I saved those, cut them and arranged them in glass vases. I filled the vases with sufficient water. Then I stuck some fake, red holly berry stems that I had purchased from a craft store ages ago to make several, pretty red and green arrangements.
Another decorating idea using nature is to place a candle in a hurricane lamp and pour real cranberries around the candle. Make sure you don’t fill it up so far that the berries will burn. It’s very – or berry – colorful and looks great.
As you decorate, put on some Christmas music. This is a fun way to practice a form of Christian meditation. Meditation isn’t just about mantras and silence. Meditation also means thinking and planning. You are thinking and planning to celebrate the day of Christ’s birth. So, when you are putting up your Christmas decorations, don’t think of it as a chore. Take this opportunity to meditate. You’ll feel more joy and less stress in the process.

Christmas Ideas – Family, Children – Read Christmas stories – Don’t spend money, go to the library. Pick books out together. Add Christmas songs to your nightly lullabies
This is Christmas idea number 9 in my countdown to Christmas. At the beginning of the month I was determined not to let the hustle and bustle steal my joy. It’s working! I am celebrating Christmas every day with a new idea.
From the time my son was born, I read to him every night. I am passionate about literacy and teaching children to read. So, what better way to celebrate Christmas than to read a Christmas story. It can be “the” story from the Bible or books like The Polar Express or How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, yes, the latter two stories started as books and are not just movies.
You don’t have to go out and buy these books either, although they are not expensive. A free alternative is to go to the library. Why not take your children and let them pick out some books. There’s no budget to think about, so they can pick what they want.
This activity will also get children – and adults – away from the television. I heard a staggering statistic yesterday on the news that Americans watch a whopping 31 hours of television a week!
Something else I did when my son was little was sing him lullabies every night. I had an entire repertoire. At Christmas time I would add some carols like Away in a Manager or songs like, I’ll be Home for Christmas. It was funny too, because he knew every song. One time I proceeded to tip toe out of the room after I was done singing. From the bed I heard him say in a very small voice, “Mom, you forgot to sing the song about the horses.”
