The very first email I wrote was about wishing for a burning bush to show us the way. That’s because we all want guidance. We all want certainty.
We all have doubts, fears, worry, and anxiety from time to time. It’s part of being human. When you have a crisis in health, when you suffer a loss of any kind, unemployment, a relationship, a home, it’s a vulnerable and uncertain place to be.
But it is in the midst of uncertainty that God is there – on that you can be certain.
Uncertain times can be tremendous opportunities for growth.
When Robert lost his job way back in 2009, opportunities in the form of marketing clients showed up to provide for us financially. Instead of trusting in my writing and creating to provide, I went for the certain path I already knew. I didn’t accept the gift of uncertainty. I wasn’t ready to receive it. That’s because I hadn’t fully trusted myself or God.
The gift of uncertainty has shown up again. This time I took it. In fact, I gave it to myself.
There were two marketing clients I was serving. One was my original doctor client. Each time I received a check for my services, I tried to justify that income funding the real work God has called me to do. I believe our sole and soul purpose is to become all that we were created to be.
So, I told my client that I needed an exit strategy. They were very understanding. We set a date of two months.
I can’t tell you how much lighter I felt that day. I finally had the conversation that had been weighing me down for about ten months.
The following day I wasn’t feeling that lightness. I had fully embraced the gift of uncertainty. A tiny bit of me wanted to panic.
Fortunately, I attended a vocational workshop a few days before – I might add, by complete serendipity.
My spiritual mentor invited me and Robert to a concert on Saturday night. We went online and purchased tickets without checking our physical calendars. Our mental calendars thought that night was free. We had a wedding reception to attend that we’d known about for months.
That same day, singer-songwriter, Carrie Newcomer, (whose concert we couldn’t attend) was conducting a vocational workshop. I was able to switch our concert tickets for the workshop.
There were about 50 people in attendance. You could sense the energy and love in the room.
We were led through several exercises, with the last exercise of creating a song together. We named the song The Gift of Uncertainty. Here are the words:
Verse 1:
I thought it would be different.
I thought I’d know by now.
I still have my questions.
I still don’t know how.
But if my heart is open,
If I release control,
And I wait with patience,
I become more whole.
Chorus:
I don’t have to know,
Because the mystery unfolds.
It gives us space to grow.
Nothing’s etched in stone.
I don’t have to know.
Verse 2:
I feel so much lighter
Learning to let go.
It’s a welcome kind of freedom,
And it clears the way to home.
Chorus:
I don’t have to know,
Because the mystery unfolds.
It gives us space to grow.
Nothing’s etched in stone.
I don’t have to know.
When we let go of uncertainty, it does give us space to grow. When we do what makes our heart sing, we come home to ourselves. Home is a place of security.
When we are certain that God loves us and wants to fulfill our heart’s desires, and when we stop to be still and listen, we can hear God whispering, “Go, go, go, and, grow, grow, grow!” We will become unstoppable.
So, uncertainty is a gift. It’s not a gift that keeps on giving. God will show you the way and provide.
Since letting go of the security of my marketing clients, God has provided. I’ve written two books and produced three meditation CDs all with the intention of helping people find greater peace and to know how much they are loved by God.
