The expression to fall off the wagon implies a lapse in being sober. Where the expression to fall off a horse, you need to get back on again implies a failure and trying again.
Spiritual disciplines: prayer, contemplative prayer, reading Scripture and meditation are all necessary to live a life of peace, power and purpose. They are easy to do and easy not to do. It’s easy to fall off the wagon or horse.
As Christians, we are told that we are “in” the world but not “of” the world. The world is a noisy, busy, demanding place. Unless we take time to slip away from the world and retreat to a more heavenly place, we will experience stress and overwhelm.
When you fall off the wagon of eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising, your body feels it. If you don’t floss your teeth, over time you can lose your teeth!
When you don’t spend time in prayer or meditation, your body, mind and soul feels it too. Even though I’ve created this website to help others experience the peace and power through meditation, during super busy times, the first thing to go can often times be my meditation practice.
If I fall off the meditation horse, I will become stressed, worn out and even sick! I rarely get colds, however, if I don’t take time to be still, my immune system can become weak.
The good news is that once you train your mind to be still through practicing meditation, it’s just like learning how to ride a horse or a bike, you never forget. At first it’s hard to quiet the mind. As you practice it becomes easier and you will never forget how to do it.
That’s why it’s so important to get back on the meditation horse or spiritual discipline that you follow.
In our busy world, it sounds crazy that stopping to be still can help you relieve stress and be more productive. It does.
The most important benefit, however, is spending time to be in God’s presence and to allow God’s love and peace to fill your mind, body and spirit.
Have you never tried meditation or want to enjoy a meditation experience to help you experience God’s peace and presence? These guided meditations will take you there.
Finding no time to meditate? Here’s a way to meditate on one word for the day through this simple but powerful book God Notes – Daily Doses of Divine Encouragement.

January 19, 2013 6:20 pmHi Kate,
I am always encouraged with writing from the Apostle Paul. Let me give you this from Philippians, Chapter 4: Entertain no worry. Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, put your mind on these things. And the God of peace will be with you.
I wish you and your mother peace now and always.
